Requirements 

Real Estate salespersons, broker salespersons, and brokers must complete 12 hours of CE per licensing cycle to renew their license for the next licensing cycle. At least six of the 12 hours must be in the core topics.

If you obtained your license before July 1, 2025, you were licensed during the 2023–2025 licensing term. You would generally have been required to complete the applicable CE for that term to renew your license for the July 1, 2025–June 30, 2027 term.

For the current 2025–2027 term, you are required to complete 12 CE credits by April 30, 2027 to avoid the $200 late CE processing fee. Your license renewal deadline is June 30, 2027. 

The current 12-credit requirement is:

• 2 credits — Ethics
• 1 credit — Fair Housing & NJ Law Against Discrimination
• 1 credit — Agency (new mandatory category for the 2027 renewal)
• 2 additional credits — any Core topic
• 6 credits — Core and/or Elective topics 

That totals 12 CE credits. 

The following topics are deemed as approved for Elective Courses: 

• Commercial Real Estate 
• Property Management 
• Seasonal Rentals 
• Real Estate Sales Full Disclosure Act and Real Estate Timeshare Act Financing Land Use 
• Real Estate Valuation 
• Foreclosure and Short-Sale Transactions 
• Specific Aspects of Residential Real Estate Transactions 

CE courses will only count for credit one time during each licensing cycle. The NJREC requires you to complete all of your CE requirements by 4/30/27 to avoid a late filing fee of $200. 

Important distinction for newly licensed people

The NJ Real Estate Commission uses a two-year cycle. For the 2025–2027 cycle:

Licensed before July 1, 2026 → CE IS required for the 2027 renewal.

Licensed July 1, 2026 or later → CE is NOT required for the 2027 renewal. Their first CE requirement would apply to the following cycle.

So, for example, someone who received their license in June 2025 would have a different CE situation from someone licensed in June 2026, even though both are relatively new licensees.

Completion of 12 credit hours of CE applicable to the license term

At least six of the twelve credits must be obtained in courses within the "core." The six shall include at least two credit hours on ethics and at least one credit in Fair Housing & New Jersey Law Against Discrimination. The remaining six credits can be electives or core.

Successful completion of one or more broker pre-licensure education courses (within the license term), as set forth in NJAC 11:5-2.1, shall fulfill CE requirements for renewal.

The following topics are deemed as approved for Elective Courses: 

• Commercial Real Estate 
• Property Management 
• Seasonal Rentals 
• Real Estate Sales Full Disclosure Act and Real Estate Timeshare Act Financing Land Use 
• Real Estate Valuation 
• Foreclosure and Short-Sale Transactions 
• Specific Aspects of Residential Real Estate Transactions 
  

Also, completion of the Broker pre-licensure course by real estate licensees will be equivalent to completing the 12 hours of CE for the licensing cycle in which the broker pre-licensure course is taken. Licensees completing this course will not be required to take any CE course to fulfill the requirement.
